Founded in 1999, the hallmark of Blue Rubicon has been its quest to set new standards. Recently voted PR Week’s Consultancy of the year for the fourth time, the company is now over 140 people strong with a fee income of c.£15m.

SITUATION
We’d spent over 11 years carefully building and reinvesting in Blue Rubicon before we knew that the moment had come for us to take the next step as a business and as a shareholder manager team. Our outstanding team and unique culture have driven our success to date but with our ambitious plans for the future a partner was needed. We also knew that we would need the best possible advice as this would be the biggest decision we would make in our careers and we absolutely had to ensure that our partner would not only provide the right investment for growth but also allow us to remain true to our culture and heritage. We worked closely with the partners to help them map their well defined strategy to the opportunities in the market place in order to deepen Blue Rubicon’s capabilities and to leverage its leadership position in reputation management with some of the world’s leading businesses and brands.

OUR BRIEF
Our main challenge was working with a company who is so far ahead of its competitors, not only in the depth and quality of its offering, but also culturally. As expected of those who share the ambition to make their company the defining agency of our generation, the shareholders were looking to preserve the key ingredients which have made Blue Rubicon a leader while fuelling future growth potential.

In order to evaluate all possible routes, we needed to immerse ourselves in the unique, high performance culture and operations of the business. This enabled us to analyse and evaluate the market whilst allowing management to keep focusing on the business.

OUTCOME
The unusual shareholding structure required a change in risk profile to move the business forward and LDC’s growth capital will enable the agency to invest in new talent and services, while responding to client demand for broader capabilities in the UK and an expanded footprint in key international markets. LDC has shown real understanding of the key dynamics within the management team and, not being a fixed term fund, they are the ideal partner to help Blue Rubicon achieve their growth plan at their own pace and in their own award winning way.
